We focus on the ocean—the source of all life on Earth—and the ice-edge ecosystem of the Okhotsk Sea in particular. By learning from the rich natural systems created by drift ice and the lives of organisms in them, we seek to understand how nature sustains itself.
We study the mechanisms of ecosystems in which the sea nurtured by drift ice, and the land influenced by the sea’s energy, function as an integrated whole.
Within these ecosystems, we place special emphasis on seals, which live in close relationship with humans, and explore new approaches to management that can achieve coexistence between nature and human society.
Through the three core practices of learning, communicating, and taking action, our mission is to watch over the connections among living beings in a constantly changing environment, and to pass on both a rich natural world and scientifically grounded knowledge to future generations.

| Our Mission | Marine Wildlife Center of Japan works primarily in the marine areas extending from the Northern Territories and the Kuril Islands to the coastal waters of Hokkaido. Our mission is to promote coexistence between people and emblematic species of marine ecosystem conservation, including marine mammals and seabirds.
We conduct multidisciplinary research on marine wildlife while conserving the ecosystems of these waters. We also engage in public education and the development of related industries, including ecotourism, to help create conditions in which sustainable livelihoods for coastal communities can be maintained. Through these activities, we aim to contribute to both ecosystem conservation and community development, thereby enhancing the overall well-being of local communities. Our organization operates based on the three core pillars of Research, Public Outreach, and Policy Advocacy. | ||||||
