We hope to record moments when animals live their lives
in nature just as they always have. Why not head out to sea with us, observe together, and think about how we relate to the natural world?

Abashiri Nature Cruise’s aspirations

The Okhotsk Sea is an abundantly rich marine environment that has nurtured and supported countless forms of life—including humans—since ancient times. Among its waters, the offshore area of Abashiri is known worldwide as a highly productive marine region and has long sustained people’s livelihoods as an excellent fishing ground. The former captain, of our boat Chipashiri was involved in whaling for more than fifty years and is one of the few remaining witnesses who knew the once-abundant seas off Abashiri. In the face of environmental changes over recent years, he would repeatedly mutter that “the sea has changed dramatically.” Unfortunately, there is very little detailed scientific data left that conveys what the Abashiri offshore area was like during its most productive days. At present, we can only imagine that time through the memories and words of those who lived it. How will the waters off Abashiri change in the years to come? This question is one of the most important topics for us, as the current stewards of this vessel. That is why we continue to conduct long-term, ongoing surveys in the Abashiri offshore area, carefully accumulating data piece by piece in order to paint a clearer picture of this sea.

Philosophy and Approach of Abashiri Nature Cruise

At Abashiri Nature Cruise, we place highest importance on maintaining an appropriate distance from nature. We are constantly mindful of preserving the natural state of the sea and its inhabitants, taking great care not to disturb their daily lives. Even when we are fortunate enough to encounter marine animals, we operate the vessel with utmost caution so as not to influence their behavior, observing and collecting data quietly and respectfully. At times, marine animals may approach us on their own, but even in such moments, we never actively close the distance from our side. With nature as the main focus, our role is simply to watch over it. This is the guiding principle that we hold close to our hearts.
